Record earnings were real, but the release points to a specific mix: strong net interest income generation and lower credit loss expense supported profit while loans, deposits and assets all shrank. The unresolved issue is whether rising non-performing assets stay contained despite low charge-offs.

Net interest income and lower credit costs supported earnings as balances contracted

Net income rose to a record $129.5 million in Q3 2026 from $123.6 million a year earlier, while total revenue increased 3.9% to $288.4 million and pre-tax net income to revenue improved to 57.87% from 57.38% 8-K. The release attributes the year-on-year increase to strong net interest income generation and a reduction in credit loss expense, not to fee growth 8-K.

That matters because the sequential balance-sheet direction was weaker than the earnings line: total loans fell to $16.91 billion from $17.13 billion at June 30, 2026, deposits fell to $18.76 billion from $19.11 billion, and assets fell to $24.15 billion from $24.71 billion 8-K. Net interest margin still edged up to 4.53% from 4.51% as the rate on interest-bearing deposits declined to 2.37% from 2.39%, and management said the linked-quarter increase in fully taxable equivalent net interest income came from a $2.3 million drop in interest expense that more than offset a $2.1 million decline in interest income 8-K8-K.

Expense quality was better than Q2, but less so against last year

Non-interest expense was $121.5 million, down from $135.5 million in Q2 but up from $114.8 million a year earlier 8-K. Management said the sequential drop was primarily the absence of acquisition-related expenses incurred in Q2, while the year-on-year increase reflected franchise growth and continued investment in operations 8-K.

That makes the cleaner comparison the adjusted figures: the reported efficiency ratio improved to 40.78% from 44.54% in Q2, but adjusted efficiency ratio was 40.84% versus 40.46% in Q2 and 40.95% a year earlier 8-K. In other words, the quarter did remove a one-off cost from Q2, but underlying operating discipline looks roughly stable rather than sharply better 8-K.

Credit costs were low even as problem assets moved higher

The release shows a mixed credit picture. Net charge-offs improved to $2.1 million from $5.8 million in Q2, and the allowance for credit losses was 1.93% of total loans versus 1.92% in Q2 8-K8-K.

But non-performing loans rose to $200.8 million from $185.3 million, and non-performing assets increased to $245.3 million from $228.6 million, lifting non-performing assets to total assets to 1.02% from 0.93% 8-K. The release does not explain the underlying causes of that deterioration, and with only the earnings release there is no cash flow detail or fuller risk discussion yet to test whether this is timing noise or an early credit issue 8-K8-K.

What to watch next

  • Whether lower deposit and borrowing costs can keep supporting NIM if loans and deposits decline further 8-K8-K8-K.

  • Whether rising non-performing loans and assets reverse, since charge-offs were low this quarter but problem-asset ratios moved up 8-K8-K.
