Home Bancorp's quarter shows core spread income was steadier than the headline profit decline suggests, but that stability was bought against a clear deterioration in credit quality. The release points to one immediate question: whether the new nonaccrual credits stay low-loss as management expects.

Net revenue equals net interest income plus noninterest income. Pre-tax pre-provision income is calculated as net revenue less noninterest expense. Both are derived figures. Balance-sheet credit metrics are period-end values.
Profit fell because credit costs and ORE expense rose
Net income fell to $10.1 million, or $1.28 diluted EPS, from $12.4 million, or $1.59, a year earlier, while net margin compressed to 25.2% from 32.7% 8-K. The release makes clear that the nearer-term pressure was not revenue erosion alone: third-quarter provision expense was $1.0 million versus a $229,000 reversal a year ago, and noninterest expense rose to $26.3 million from $22.5 million, with foreclosed assets, net, at $2.0 million versus $377,000 8-K.
That matters for quality of earnings. Revenue held up better than profit, with net interest income at $35.9 million versus $34.1 million a year earlier and noninterest income at $4.2 million versus $3.7 million, but the quarter converted that into less bottom-line profit because credit-related costs moved through both the provision line and ORE expense 8-K.
Pre-tax pre-provision income declined 9.9% to $13.8 million, despite a 6.0% increase in net revenue. Noninterest expenses rose 16.8%, reflecting higher personnel costs and expenses associated with foreclosed assets. This shows that earnings pressure extended beyond the higher provision for loan losses.
Core earning power held up better than the margin print
Management's main defense is that core earnings were resilient, and the release supports that in a narrow sense. Net interest income was essentially stable sequentially at $35.9 million even though net interest margin fell to 4.19% from 4.24%, as approximately $862,000 of interest reversals from loans moved to nonaccrual and higher deposit costs were partly offset by loan pricing, portfolio mix and funding mix 8-K.
The deposit side still shows ongoing pricing pressure rather than relief. Total deposits slipped to $3.1 billion from $3.1 billion sequentially, core deposits fell $28.3 million to $2.3 billion, and the average rate on interest-bearing deposits increased to 2.33% from 2.28% as the bank raised rates to remain competitive 8-K. That leaves the quarter looking more like a bank preserving spread dollars through balance sheet management than one expanding underlying margin.
Credit deterioration is now the central issue
The quarter's real change was credit migration. Six loan relationships totaling $19.5 million were placed on nonaccrual status, pushing nonperforming assets to $53.7 million, or 1.49% of total assets, from $39.2 million, or 1.09%, at June 30, 2026; nonaccrual loans rose to $41.9 million from $26.4 million 8-K. Management said it does not anticipate sizable losses from these relationships, and the reserve build was modest, with allowance for loan losses at $34.4 million, or 1.24% of loans, versus $34.0 million, or 1.22%, in the prior quarter 8-K.
That combination cuts both ways. It suggests management views the problem credits as manageable, but the release does not provide enough detail on collateral values, borrower profiles or workout timing to test that confidence, and those details may not arrive until the 10-Q or call materials. What is already visible is weaker coverage of problem assets: allowance for loan losses to nonperforming assets fell to 64.07% from 86.70% sequentially 8-K.
What to watch next
Whether the six nonaccrual relationships produce the limited losses management expects, given NPAs rose to $53.7 million after the $19.5 million transfer 8-K.
Whether deposit pricing pressure and core deposit runoff persist after the average rate on interest-bearing deposits rose to 2.33% and core deposits fell by $28.3 million sequentially 8-K.
