Amazon Q3 2026: AWS drives record operating income amid heavy AI investment

Updated: October 29, 2026

Visual Story

  • AWS drives record profit amid aggressive AI spending
  • Cloud acceleration leads Q3 net sales to $201.9B
  • Operating margin climbs to record 13.9%
  • Heavy AI capex turns trailing free cash flow negative

Amazon delivered a very strong third quarter in 2026, combining double-digit sales growth with record operating profitability. The standout was AWS, which accelerated sharply and drove most of the earnings expansion, while heavy artificial intelligence investment weighed on free cash flow rather than on reported operating performance 1.

Revenue growth remained strong despite a Prime Day timing headwind

Excluding foreign exchange, growth was 13% 1. The reported comparison was also distorted by calendar timing, because Prime Day moved into Q2 in most large countries in 2026, while it fell entirely in Q3 in 2025. Amazon said that excluding this shift, third-quarter year-over-year growth would have been about 400 basis points higher 1.

AWS Q3 2025 sales are shown as 33.0 based on the reported 39.3% year-over-year increase to $46.0 billion.

The mix of growth mattered as much as the headline number. North America remained the largest business at $112.9 billion of sales in Q3 2026, while international revenue reached $43.1 billion 1. AWS, however, was the engine of acceleration, rising 39% year over year to $46.0 billion 1. That means cloud represented a much larger share of incremental growth than its share of total revenue.

Record operating income was driven mainly by AWS and better retail execution

Profitability improved much faster than revenue. Operating income increased to $28.1 billion in Q3 2026 from $17.4 billion in Q3 2025, while operating margin rose to 13.9%, which Amazon described as its highest ever 1. The company stated: "Operating income was $28.1 billion and operating margin was 13.9%, Amazon's highest operating margin ever"1.

Operating margin was 13.9% in Q3 2026 versus 9.7% in Q3 2025, as reported.

The segment detail shows how broad-based the improvement was, but also how dominant AWS has become in group earnings. North America nearly doubled segment operating income to $8.7 billion from $4.8 billion, showing that the retail model continued to become more efficient even without the Prime Day timing benefit 1. International also improved, with operating income reaching $1.6 billion from $1.2 billion 1.

This mix is strategically important. Amazon is no longer relying only on retail scale to grow profit. In Q3 2026, it combined better retail economics with very high-margin cloud expansion, producing a much stronger earnings profile than in the prior-year quarter 1.

AWS was the defining growth and strategy story of the quarter

AWS was the clearest highlight in Amazon’s Q3 2026 report. Segment sales increased 39.3% year over year to a $184 billion annualized revenue run rate, which Amazon said was its fastest growth in nearly five years 1. Andy Jassy said, "Our AWS investment in functionality and infrastructure is working"1.

The quarter also showed that AWS growth was supported by both customer demand and product expansion.

  • Amazon signed new AWS agreements with customers including Meta, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Salesforce, Oracle, Qualcomm, Verizon, ADP, Stripe, Accenture Edge, and others 1.

  • Amazon Bedrock continued to scale rapidly, with Fortune 500 companies spending nearly 7 times more year over year and total Bedrock token volume growing nearly 17 times year over year 1.

  • Bedrock expanded its model selection, including new OpenAI and Anthropic offerings, and Amazon launched built-in web search for OpenAI models on Bedrock 1.

  • Amazon launched the public preview of Bedrock Managed Agents and continued scaling AgentCore, where customers deployed 2 times more agents in Q3 than in the prior three quarters combined 1.

  • Lambda surpassed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, and Amazon introduced Lambda Web Functions to broaden serverless application use cases 1.

  • Amazon made AWS Continuum generally available and expanded Amazon Quick into core workplace applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel 1.

  • Amazon also acquired DuckLabs, the company behind DuckDB, to strengthen analytics capabilities in its cloud ecosystem 1.

Taken together, these developments suggest that AWS is not only benefiting from a cyclical spending wave in artificial intelligence, but is also broadening its platform relevance across inference, agents, analytics, developer tooling, and enterprise productivity.

Net income slipped, but for non-operating reasons

At first glance, Amazon’s bottom line looked slightly weaker than its operating result. Net income decreased to $20.7 billion in Q3 2026 from $21.2 billion in Q3 2025, and diluted EPS declined to $1.89 from $1.95 1. However, this was not a sign of weakening core profitability.

The company explicitly said the decline was driven primarily by pre-tax gains of $9.5 billion in Q3 2025 related to its investments in Anthropic, recorded in non-operating income 1. The underlying operating business improved materially in Q3 2026 despite the lower reported net income 1.

Cash flow stayed strong, but AI capex pushed free cash flow deeply negative

Amazon’s cash generation remained robust at the operating level. Trailing twelve-month operating cash flow increased 29% to $168.3 billion, up from $130.7 billion a year earlier 1. That indicates the core business continued to convert scale into cash effectively.

The pressure point was investment intensity. Free cash flow for the trailing twelve months fell to an outflow of $42.4 billion, compared with an inflow of $14.8 billion in the trailing twelve months ended September 30, 2025 1. Amazon attributed that change primarily to a year-over-year increase of $94.8 billion in purchases of property and equipment, net of proceeds and incentives, and said this increase primarily reflected investments in artificial intelligence 1.

This is a critical feature of the quarter. Amazon’s income statement shows record profitability, but its cash flow statement shows that much of that profitability is being recycled into infrastructure. The company is effectively prioritizing capacity and strategic positioning in AI over near-term free cash flow.

Management’s message was unusually ambitious

Management’s tone in Q3 2026 was notably confident, especially around AWS and the long-term scale of the business. Jassy said, "There has never been a trillion dollar revenue business, and we may have two of them in the next 5-10 years"1. He also pointed to improving retail margins, stronger delivery speed, and continued progress in newer businesses including Grocery, Pharmacy, Amazon Leo, and Zoox 1.

That commentary matters because it frames the current investment cycle. Amazon is not presenting the AI build-out as a short-term opportunity or defensive response. It is presenting it as part of a broader effort to expand both its retail and cloud franchises into substantially larger profit pools over time 1.

Conclusion

Amazon’s Q3 2026 was a high-quality quarter. Revenue growth remained strong despite a Prime Day timing drag, operating income reached a record level, and AWS delivered exceptional acceleration that reinforced its role as the group’s primary profit engine 1.

The main trade-off is capital intensity. Amazon entered the next quarter with strong business momentum, but also with free cash flow under pressure because artificial intelligence infrastructure spending has become extraordinarily large 1.
