Duolingo reported $1.038 billion of revenue for 2025, but it also ended the year with $496.2 million of deferred revenue. Both figures appear in the same annual filing. They answer different questions. One measures services earned in the period; the other represents obligations still to be fulfilled. Our task was to connect those disclosures without mistaking annual subscription cash collections for earned revenue.
This is a behind-the-scenes companion to ASC 606: Why Duolingo's $496M Is Not Yet Revenue. The main article explains the accounting and business story. Here we focus on how to find, reconcile and document the evidence using Clarifo's indexed SEC filing search and a reproducible prompt for ChatGPT or Claude.
The most important step in subscription revenue research is defining what each number measures before calculating growth.
The research starts with a language problem
Company reports can refer to revenue, bookings, billings, deferred revenue, receipts and subscriptions in nearby passages. These terms are not interchangeable. We searched Duolingo's FY2025 Form 10-K for the recognition policy, deferred revenue and bookings, keeping the year fixed rather than mixing disclosures from different financial periods.
In the Clarifo filing-search results, the Item 7 discussion explicitly identifies customer subscription cash collection as a major operating cash source. Another retrieved passage shows the operating metrics: FY2025 subscription bookings of $996.268 million, total bookings of $1,158.425 million and subscription revenue of $873.442 million. A further cash-flow passage identifies $496.2 million of deferred revenue at December 31, 2025, expected to be recognized within twelve months if the other revenue criteria are met.
These are useful research leads, not the complete answer. The next step is to open the original 10-K and verify the detailed deferred revenue roll-forward in Note 5, alongside the revenue recognition policies. The fact that several related amounts appear in the search results is exactly why the memo needs field names and source locations.
The audit table: from opening to closing deferred revenue
| Deferred revenue · FY2025 | USD millions |
|---|---|
| Balance at January 1, 2025 | 372.884 |
| Recognized from beginning balance | (372.434) |
| Other recognition from deferred revenue | (572.589) |
| Revenue newly deferred | 1,068.345 |
| Balance at December 31, 2025 | 496.205 |
Using the rounded amounts shown here, 372.884 − 372.434 − 572.589 + 1,068.345 = 496.206 million; the $0.001 million difference from the reported $496.205 million ending balance reflects rounding. This table is a roll-forward of a liability, not a reported free-cash-flow bridge.
In a financial research workflow, a one-thousand-dollar rounding difference should be flagged as a presentation issue, not silently eliminated by changing a source figure. The reliable output retains the company's printed closing value and records the calculation using reported precision.
Separate four revenue clocks before calculating percentages
Across the access period
Annual prepayments become revenue as access is provided.
When ads are placed
The earning event is different from a subscription renewal.
After the test process
Certification and proctoring requirements affect timing.
The disclosed policies also describe in-app purchases, including consumable virtual goods. This matters to the analysis because a single-company total revenue figure combines activities with different performance obligations. We should not invent a single recognition schedule for the entire application.
From the same FY2025 report, subscription revenue of $873.442 million divided by total reported revenue of $1,037.589 million produces an approximately 84.2% subscription share. That calculation is defensible because the numerator and denominator come from the same report and period. It says nothing on its own about the split between monthly and annual subscriptions.
Reproduce the work with Clarifo connected
For this use case we used Clarifo filing search to locate the relevant FY2025 SEC passages. The next prompt turns that search into an explicit checking workflow for ChatGPT or Claude; it is not a claim that an automated Workspace document or a Claude session was already executed.
Using Clarifo, analyze Duolingo FY2025 Form 10-K under ASC 606. Retrieve the revenue recognition policy, Note 5 revenue categories, the deferred revenue roll-forward and the Item 7 bookings discussion. Explain which figures are revenue, bookings, deferred balances and cash-flow items. Reproduce the roll-forward in USD millions, confirm any rounding difference, and calculate the subscription share of total revenue. Cite the original filing for every reported figure and label calculated values.
Turn the answer into a source-backed research memo
A good documentation output is a one-page reconciliation and a short policy matrix. Its heading should specify Duolingo, FY2025, ASC 606 and the period ended December 31, 2025. The memo should include the roll-forward, the policy for each revenue stream, the subscription share calculation and unresolved questions. Link every reported metric to its 10-K section. An analyst can organize that structure in Clarifo Workspace or in an equivalent research document.
Duolingo reported $496.205 million of deferred revenue at FY2025 year-end. The reported recognition and deferral movements reconcile to that balance within rounding. Subscription sales represented approximately 84.2% of annual revenue. Neither the closing deferred balance nor the deferral line should be described as total subscription bookings.
This is the genuine time-saving opportunity: instead of manually hunting through unrelated search results, the analyst works from a filing-scoped set of evidence and a repeatable reconciliation. The remaining responsibility is the same as with manual research—check units, exact source tables, recognition policies and the scope of every derived number.
What the method does not prove
Deferred revenue growth is not an estimate of future cash generation. A deferred revenue liability does not mean a separate pool of cash remains untouched, and recognized revenue from a liability does not normally require the customer to pay a second time. To evaluate Duolingo as an investment, the accounting analysis needs additional operating evidence about bookings, subscription retention, acquisition costs and margins.
Use a source-linked revenue workflow with Clarifo in ChatGPT or Claude, then document the roll-forward and accounting policies for review.
